Ubuntu is a DebianLinux-based LinuxDistribution. It is developed by Canonical, a company founded by South African philanthropist Mark Shuttleworth, who made a lot of money off Thawte. According to its site,

Ubuntu is an African word, meaning Humanity To Others. Ubuntu also means I am what I am because of who we all are. The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.”

One of Ubuntu's main strengths is bringing a nice up to date DesktopEnvironment (GNOME 2.8) to the architecture and package breadth of DebianLinux. Ubuntu is also committed to a 6 month release cycle, with 18 months of security and dataloss upgrades. While still a very young LinuxDistribution in the scheme of things it has a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see where it is in another 6 months time.
