lirc is the Linux Infrared Remote Control driver.
If you have a serial port remote, you might need to create a character device for lirc to use: mknod /dev/lirc c 61 0 . You should possibly use a udev rule for this.
# sudo setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
(replace with correct COM port as necessary)
# apt-get install lirc-modules-source # cd /usr/src # ln -sf /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ linux # cd modules/lirc # sudo debian/rules binary-modules # dpkg -i /usr/src/lirc-modules-*.deb # (install the right .deb to taste)
UDev rule
/etc/lirc/rules.d/lirc-rules:
KERNEL=="lirc0", SYMLINK"lirc"=
/etc/lirc/permissions.d/lirc.permissions:
KERNEL=="lirc[0-9dm]*", MODE="0660", GROUP="lirc"
