MythTV is a project to provide the "mythological" DigitalConvergence box. It provides PVR functionality, including time shifting live TV (where you can pause and later start replaying/rewind live TV), programmed recording of TV shows, playing back video & audio, and also has plugins for a weather channel and a game frontend. You can use it with hardware MPEG 2 encoders like the Hauppauge PVR-150/250/350/500, Software TV tuner cards like the BrookTree 878, DVB-S cards such as the TechniSat SkyStar 2, or any other TvTunerCards supported by the Video4Linux APIs.
