-scp(1) is an [Acronym ] for "secure cp", and designed to be a secure replacement for rcp(1) which was well known to be insecure. scp(1) does it's copying completely over ssh(1), so if you can ssh(1) to a box, you can scp(1) to or from it. scp(1) also allows you to use authorized_keys for passwordless secure copying.
