22 AristotlePagaltzis 1 !! Subscribe to the WLUG Mail List
18 DanielLawson 2 You can subscribe to the list by __visiting the [list home page|http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug]__, or by sending email to [wlug-request@list.waikato.ac.nz | mailto:wlug-request@list.waikato.ac.nz?subject=subscribe] with a subject of "subscribe".
3
4 [WLUG]'s MailingList is one of the primary methods of communication between members. It is (barely) moderated, has very low to moderate traffic, and exists to help the [LUG] members keep in touch, get organised, and offer help to anyone who has a [Linux]-related problem. We have [list archives | http://list.waikato.ac.nz/pipermail/wlug] too.
5
6 __Note:__ you ''must'' be subscribed to the list to be able to post to the list. __Any message sent from an unsubscribed address will be automatically discarded!__
7
8 !! Acceptable Use Policy
9
10 See http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/mailing-list-aup.txt for the definitive AUP. Here is a summary:
11
12 The [WLUG] MailingList is the discussion-list extension of the WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup.
13
14 As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in the official WlugCharter, in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list.
15
16 While this is an AcceptableUsePolicy, the WlugCommittee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal here. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the [WLUG], and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do major harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of [GNU/Linux] and all things FreeSoftware/OpenSource related.
17
18 List discussion should
19
20 * be honest
21 * accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation
22 * maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar
23 * not indulge in ad hominem attacks
24 * not continue inflammatory or abusive threads
25 * not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies
26 * not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views
27 * not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs -- which may be announced once only
23 IanStewart 28 * job advertisements are to be open source operating systems related, suitable for a resident in New Zealand
29 * job advertisements require all available details be posted rather than a link
18 DanielLawson 30 * not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder
31 * not defame any person or organisation
32
33 Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer.
34
35 If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WlugCommittee.
36
37 !! History
38
39 Our first post is lost to us due to the list running originally on a manky MicrosoftExchange server, and GreigMcGill not keeping archives. However, [the first post to the first "real" list | http://list.waikato.ac.nz/pipermail/wlug/1999-March/000000.html] dates back to March '99, which puts the origins of [WLUG] at (very approximately) six months earlier.
40
41 I've found a copy of a [post to the original address-list mailing list|http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/Hamilton_Linux_Users_Group.eml] in one of my old mailspools. It includes a link to the following [website| http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/g.reed/linux.htm], which is miraculously still alive!
