[Acronym] for __S__imple __M__ail __T__ransfer __P__rotocol It's what email uses for sending. You can implement secure [SMTP] using the STARTTLS command. [POP3] and [IMAP] are what is used for recieving email. Mail format is specified in RFC:2822, and then extended with [MIME].
