Comments, editing, welcome. This is pulled from a variety of sources and edited to fit, so it might not make sense. I would like to see this document in its final form ratified at the next meeting, so we can start collecting subscriptions and allowing accounts to be created. -- CraigBox

Use of the WLUG community server at hoiho.wlug.org.nz (hereby referred to as 'the WLUG Community Server' indicates acceptance of the following Acceptable Use Policy. Violation of any of these conditions will result in the immediate cancellation of the account(s).

  • Shell Access is only made available to paid members of the Waikato Linux User's Group. Any accounts found being accessed from outside the WLUG's catchment area will be terminated.

(Does this mean that I can't use the WLUG Community Server if I go overseas? --MattBrown)

The implication in that clause is that you can't give access to this account to your mate from {Thai, Fin, Ice, Ire, Green, Po, Swazi, Switzer, Deutsch}-land. The only person who is allowed to access the account is you, and if you're here, and you log in from overseas, chances are it's not you. So in your case Matt you'd be fine.

(I assume we're worried about international bandwidth? Otherwise, if someone paid to be a member then they should be allowed to access the machine. --MatthiasDallmeier)

At this point I'd like to clarify a point here: you are not buying access to this machine, you are donating a subscription to the WLUG, and one of the benefits is limited access to this machine that can be removed at any time. We don't want people to sue if they're kicked off and say "But, but, I paid for access to that box.

No, the above was taken from other AUPs on other sites. I dont think Net4U's traffic model differentiates between national and international traffic. However, this issue is up to Net4U. Comments from Net4U? With respect to the actual point above, its probably best to remove the second part of that clause, its unneeded. --DanielLawson

I earlier added Shell access only, because once the wiki is there anyone reading without being a wlug member would be in breach of this policy (www access) -- KyleCarter

  • Customers are prohibited from transmitting on or through the WLUG Community Server, any material that is, in the discretion of the WLUG committee, unlawful, obscene, threatening, abusive, libelous, or hateful, or encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offence, give rise to civil liability, or otherwise violate any New Zealand or international law.
  • The WLUG Community Server may only be used for lawful purposes. Transmission, distribution, or storage of any information, data or material in violation of New Zealand law is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, material protected by copyright, trademark, trade secret, or any other statute. The WLUG committee reserves the right to remove such illegal material from its server.
  • The resale of access to the WLUG Community Server is not permitted.
  • All activities on the WLUG Community Server will be monitored and logged.
  • Passwords for the WLUG Community Server are required to be a minimum of 8 characters long, contain at least one non-alphanumeric character and not be based on a dictionary word or common name. (I hate these password clauses -- KyleCarter)

The following activities are specifically disallowed:

  1. Participation in any illegal activity including, but not limited to:

    1. Distributing Illegal Material

      1. WaReZ and pirated software
      2. Illegal Sexual Material
      3. Creditcard information
      4. Private third party data
  2. Usage of excessive local server resources (including, but not limited to CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth, file handles, inodes etc).
  3. No running background processes without permission, especially:

    1. IRC Bots, Proxys, Bouncers, Servers or Screened IRC Clients.
    2. Other network services such as MUD servers, SMTP servers, game servers.
    3. dnetc, SetiAtHome or whatever else is the favour of the month. By the time everyone runs their favourite tool we'll have a background LA well over 20, the poor box as bugger all RAM as it is. -- PerryLorier
  4. Don't circumvent administration tools such as idle daemons, time or traffic accounting or charges.
  5. Attacks on other people including, but not limited to:

    1. Spamming (PerryLorier)
    2. DenialOfService (Distributed or otherwise) (PerryLorier)
    3. Exploits (PerryLorier)
    4. Cracking
    5. PortScan?ning (Special Exception if you have permission) (PerryLorier)
  6. Annoying people by not following netiquette (Just a note that I sneaked in this point without telling anyone. --MatthiasDallmeier, PerryLorier)
  7. Any suspicious activity may result in a cancellation of the account.
  8. Anything related to IRC. We don't need the poor Box DDoS'd by other people.

Other Misc "Rules":

  1. The WLUG committee reserve the right to terminate your account for any reason what so ever, including, no reason at all. (hmm, guilty even if proven innocent? --KyleCarter, Sometimes you find someone who abuses the services who isn't actually breaking the rules, and you can't remove them easily, also we may wish to deny new accounts since the machine is overloaded and people can use another one or similar, or just remove accounts from people who don't use them to free resources so others can. -- PerryLorier)
  2. Accounts are for WLUG members only. Accounts are only for the user they were assigned to, giving access to other people is prohibited. If other users are found using your account you are responsible for their actions.
  3. The WLUG Committee will attempt to comply with New Zealand Police in any investigation regarding illegal activity originating, targetting or in any way involving the WLUG Community Server, or any related resources.

Violation of these guidelines can result in your account being terminated, and possible expulsion from the UserGroup?.

The Waikato Linux Users Group Incorporated cannot be held responsible to the content of data passing through its community server. We recommend that critical or private data is not stored on the server. WLUG cannot be held responsible for any lost and/or corrupted data. Services are offered for "as is" for free. The WLUG committee reserve the right to stop offering them without prior notice.
