Acronym for Distributed Component Object Model, an extension of the Component Object Model (COM) to support objects distributed across a network. DCOM was developed by MicrosoftCorporation and has been submitted to the IETF as a draft standard. So far, thank goodness, it has not been ratified! :)

Since 1996, it has been part of MicrosoftWindows.

DCOM is an implementation of CORBA. Unlike CORBA, which runs on many OSes, DCOM is currently implemented only for MicrosoftWindows.
