The full documentation for dirname is maintained as a Texinfo manual. If the info and dirname programs are properly installed at your site, the command info dirname should give you access to the complete manual.
dirname(1) is the 'opposite' of basename(1) - given a path and a filename (/foo/bar/baz), basename will give you 'baz' and dirname will give you /foo/bar/.
