JohnCarmack is the god-like programmer from id Software, an American company famous for three huge names: Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.

Carmack single-handedly saved OpenGL from MicrosoftCorporation-induced doom by introducing GLQuake, a port of the insanely popuar first person shooter to the graphics libraries. His other claims to greatness involve pushing for Linux ports of all id's games and the release of the source for Wolf3D, Doom, Quake 1 and Quake 2 under the GPL.

"Tall, thin, pale, ponytailed, he looks the part of the self-taught programming genius. His only known vice is his high-performance Ferraris. In his field, nobody is more respected or influential: when SteveJobs wanted to get the Macintosh back on track as a gaming platform, he called Carmack to figure out how." -- Time Magazine

What Carmack does drives the North American graphics chipset industry. He is without a doubt one of the worlds leaders in computer graphics.
