Something that you had to do a lot more of with FreeSoftware in the old days. Nowadays, most LinuxDistributions will offer a sufficiently wide variety of software via their PackageManagement systems, that you will rarely need to do this. Certainly it’s something that users NewToLinux should avoid until they get more experience.
