When used in reference to a datatype, 64bit means that the datatype (usually a pointer, integer or floating point number) is 64 bits wide.

When used in reference to a CPU, other hardware or OperatingSystem, 64bit means pointers are 64 bits wide. Alphas are 64bit machines.
