According to the lawsuit settlement Unix System Laboratories couldn't sue anyone using the 4.4BSD-Lite sources as a codebase, this made the developers of [*BSD] to restart their development with the new blessed source.
Thanks to those who payed for 4.4BSD-Lite the development continued for two years fixing bugs and implementing requested features, but as the feature requests and bug reports became fewer and fewer the development was halted and 4.4BSD-Lite2 was released.
