!!DESCRIPTION |
17 |
18 |
19 |
This program is an attempt at creating a |
20 |
21 |
22 |
This program analyzes the currently-installed package list |
23 |
on a Debian GNU/Linux system, and reports the non-free |
24 |
packages that are currently installed to |
25 |
stdout. |
26 |
27 |
28 |
The packages in the non-free tree have restrictions on their |
29 |
use and/or distribution which cause them to fail to meet the |
30 |
terms of the Debian Free Software Guidelines included as |
31 |
part of the Debian Social Contract. However, some are |
32 |
sufficiently useful that their presence is often tolerated |
33 |
by Debian users despite their licensing. |
34 |
35 |
36 |
Richard is the most vocal among us on the issue of software |
37 |
morality, and we agree with Richard that Debian users should |
38 |
have an easy way to know when they are running non-free |
39 |
software on their systems. This program is our attempt to |
40 |
fill that need. |

!!HISTORY |
42 |
43 |
44 |
This program was written by Bdale Garbee and Bill Geddes for |
45 |
the Debian GNU/Linux system, in response to an open |
46 |
discussion with Richard Stallman about the issues |
47 |
surrounding the availability/desireability of the 'non-free' |
48 |
package tree in Debian. |
