!!DESCRIPTION |

15 |
KOI8-R is the character set of choice for encoding Russian |
16 |
texts for many Unix-like operation systems. KOI8-R is a |
17 |
successor for KOI-8, a de-facto standard for Internet Mail, |
18 |
News, WWW and other interactive services at least all over |
19 |
the ex-SU territory. |
20 |
21 |
22 |
KOI8-R is defined by RFC1489 (Registration of a Cyrillic |
23 |
Character Set). |
24 |
!!NOTE |
25 |
26 |
27 |
KOI8-R was designed for mixed Russian/English texts and |
28 |
covers only Russian Cyrillic characters, so if you're |
29 |
looking for Ukrainian, Byelorussian, etc. Cyrillic |
30 |
characters, try ISO-IR-111, or KOI8-U (Ukrainian Character |
31 |
Set), or KOI8-C (for ancient Russian texts) instead, which |
32 |
are identical to KOI8-R in the Russian Cyrillic letters |
33 |
area. |
34 |
35 |
36 |
A more complete set of Cyrillic characters is also defined |
37 |
by the ISO-8859-5 character set. |
