           replaces backslashes with forward ones.  then acts as
           *nixish.

       cflags
           if configured for dynamic loading, triggers #define
           EXT in EXTERN.h

       manifypods
           replaces strings '::' with '.' in man page names

       perl_archive
           points to libperl.a
