cdparanoia for DEBIAN
cdparanoia for DEBIAN
----------------------

Cdparanoia was extremely easy to Debianize. Thanks, Monty, for a job well
done with configure scripts and so forth.

There have been bugs filed in the past with respect to running cdparanoia
as a normal user, particularly with ide-scsi emulation (which is highly
recommended - see the FAQ). The basic issues are that normal users can't
generally access /dev/scd* or /dev/sg* and therefore can't run cdparanoia.
The solution is to add users to a group like "audio" and change those
devices to mode 660, owned by group "audio". You could of course make a
special group just for this purpose if none of the existing ones seem
correct.

Other past suggestions have been made to install cdparanoia as suid root.
This is generally seen as a bad idea because the mapping of the sg* devices
is dynamic, and can change based on several factors. In theory, cdparanoia
accessing raw SCSI devices as root is not a great idea. I'm certainly open
to other suggestions, so please send them to me if you have any good ideas.
