python2.1 (2.1.3-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * According to report #131813, the python interpreter is much faster on some
    architectures, when beeing linked statically with the python library (25%).
    Gregor and me tested on i386, m68k and alpha, but we could not reproduce
    such a speedup (generally between 5% and 10%). But we are linking the
    python executable now statically (closes: #131813).

python2.1 (2.1.2-3) unstable; urgency=high

  * Sorry, not including the python-registry ... I'm away from my
    mail and couldn't fix the errors I would definitely introduce ...
  * Revert the patch for fixing #97146 and return to the upstream
    behaviour (closes: #135461): Don't load modules with RTLD_GLOBAL.
    Upstream has rejected the patch:
      "They (Debian) claim that this "solves" bug debbug:97146, and that it
      is a good thing to copy that strategy from Redhat. This is foolish;
      the use of RTLD_GLOBAL has been stopped since Python 1.5.2 precisely
      to avoid the problem you are now seeing, and Redhat should have never
      changed the Python source in that way.

      Any library that relies on RTLD_GLOBAL needs to be fixed (through
      exposure of CAPI objects); any application that relies on RTLD_GLOBAL
      can use sys.setdlopenflags (available since Python 2.2)."

  * Updates from the CVS python21-maint branch up to 20020315.
    Mostly documentation fixes.
  * python2.1-elisp: Conflict with python2-elisp (closes: #132225).

python2.1 (2.1.2-1) unstable; urgency=high

  * New upstream version: python-2.1.2. Removed the cvs-updates.
  * Still urgency high; not yet moved to testing.
  * We were missing the python-xmlbase package. Nobody noticed ...
  * Remove empty directories from the packages (this and the former
    closes: #128294).
  * Update README.python2.1: Describe the Debian package setup. Document
    building of packages using distutils.
  * Lib/gettext.py: Add fallback argument to translation(). Set fallback
    to 1 for install(). Closes: #127954.
  * Build the -doc packages from the python source. Obsoletes the
    python2.1-src package.
    The info-tarball is included as a patch, until the secret of building
    this format is disclosed.
  * mimetypes.py: Add `/etc/mime.types' to `known_files' (closes: #128845).
  * Make the python-doc package suggest python-doc-info. This cannot be
    a dependency, because pythonX.Y-doc-info conflict to each other.
    Planned to merge these packages, when the info docs can be built from
    the source docs. Help is appreciated.
  * python-mode.el: Don't try to write in /usr/tmp, because this may not
    be writeable by the ordinary user (closes: #128296).

  * fcntlmodule: Add constants (backport from 2.2). Closes: #129102.
  * Add the email module from python-2.2. Do not include the documentation,
    because this would change the section numbers in the manual. Please use
    the documentation from the `python2.2-doc' package instead.
  * Add list of patches to /usr/share/doc/python2.1/README.Debian.

python2.1 (2.1.1-1.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * README FOR PACKAGE MAINTAINERS: It is planned to remove the python2-XXX
    packages from unstable and move on to python2.1.
    If you repackage/adapt your modules for python2.1, don't build
    python2-XXX and python2.1-XXX packages from the same source package,
    so that the python2-XXX package can be removed without influencing the
    python2.1-XXX package.

    See the debian-python mailing list at http://lists.debian.org/devel.html
    for details and the current discussion and a draft for a debian-python
    policy (August to October 2001).

  * Remove alternative for /usr/bin/python. The python-base package now
    provides the default python version.

  * Regenerate control file to fix build dependencies (closes: #116190).
  * Remove alternative for /usr/bin/{python,pydoc}.
  * Provide a libpython2.1.so symlink in /usr/lib/python2.1/config,
    so that the shared library is found when -L/usr/lib/python2.1/config
    is specified.
  * Conflict with old package versions, where /usr/bin/python is a real
    program (closes: #115943).
  * python2.1-elisp conflicts with python-elisp (closes: #115895).
  * We now have 2.1 (closes: #96851, #107849, #110243).
