19
20
21 animate - animate a sequence of images
22 !!SYNOPSIS
23
24
25 __animate [[__ ''options'' __...]__ ''file'' [[ [[
26 ''options'' ...] ''file'' ...]
27 !!DESCRIPTION
28
29
30 __Animate__ displays a sequence of images on any
31 workstation display running an X server. __animate__
32 first determines the hardware capabilities of the
33 workstation. If the number of unique colors in an image is
34 less than or equal to the number the workstation can
35 support, the image is displayed in an X window. Otherwise
36 the number of colors in the image is first reduced to match
37 the color resolution of the workstation before it is
38 displayed.
39
40
41 This means that a continuous-tone 24 bits-per-pixel image
42 can display on a 8 bit pseudo-color device or monochrome
43 device. In most instances the reduced color image closely
44 resembles the original. Alternatively, a monochrome or
45 pseudo-color image sequence can display on a continuous-tone
46 24 bits-per-pixel device.
47
48
49 To help prevent color flashing on X server visuals that have
50 colormaps, __animate__ creates a single colormap from the
51 image sequence. This can be rather time consuming. You can
52 speed this operation up by reducing the colors in the image
53 before you __mogrify__ to
54 color reduce the images to a single colormap. See
55 __mogrify(1)__ for details. Alternatively, you can use a
56 Standard Colormap; or a static, direct, or true color
57 visual. You can define a Standard Colormap with
58 ''xstdcmap''. See __xstdcmap(1)__ for details. This
59 method is recommended for colormapped X server because it
60 eliminates the need to compute a global
61 colormap.
62 !!EXAMPLES
63
64
65 To animate a set of images of a cockatoo, use:
66
67
68 animate cockatoo.*
69
70
71 To animate a cockatoo image sequence while using the
72 Standard Colormap ''best'', use:
73
74
75 xstdcmap -best animate -map best cockatoo.*
76
77
78 To animate an image of a cockatoo without a border centered
79 on a backdrop, use:
80
81
82 animate +borderwidth -backdrop cockatoo.*

374 Any option you specify on the command line remains in effect
375 for the group of images following it, until the group is
376 terminated by the appearance of any option or __-noop__.
377 For example, to animate three images, the first with 32
378 colors, the second with an unlimited number of colors, and
379 the third with only 16 colors, use:
380
381
382 animate -colors 32 cockatoo.1 -noop cockatoo.2 -colors 16
383 cockatoo.3
384
385
386 __Animate__ options can appear on the command line or in
387 your X resources file. See ''X(1)''. Options on the
388 command line supersede values specified in your X resources
389 file. Image filenames may appear in any order on the command
390 line if the image format is ''MIFF'' (refer to
391 __miff(5)__ and the __scene__ keyword is specified in
392 the image. Otherwise the images will display in the order
393 they appear on the command line.

487 !!X RESOURCES
488
489
490 __Animate__ options can appear on the command line or in
491 your X resource file. Options on the command line supersede
492 values specified in your X resource file. See __X(1)__
493 for more information on X resources.
494
495
496 All __animate__ options have a corresponding X resource.
497 In addition, the __animate__ program uses the following X
498 resources:
499
500
501 __background (__''class''
502 __Background)__
503
504
505 Specifies the preferred color to use for the Image window
506 background. The default is #ccc.
507
508
509 __borderColor (__''class''
2 perry 510 __!BorderColor)__
1 perry 511
512
513 Specifies the preferred color to use for the Image window
514 border. The default is #ccc.
515
516
517 __borderWidth (__''class''
2 perry 518 __!BorderWidth)__
1 perry 519
520
521 Specifies the width in pixels of the Image window border.
522 The default is 2.
523
524
525 __font (__''class'' __Font or
2 perry 526 !FontList)__
1 perry 527
528
529 Specifies the name of the preferred font to use in normal
530 formatted text. The default is 14 point
531 ''Helvetica''.
532
533
534 __foreground (__''class''
535 __Foreground)__
536
537
538 Specifies the preferred color to use for text within the
539 Image window. The default is black.
540
541
542 __geometry (__''class'' __geometry)__
543
544
545 Specifies the preferred size and position of the image
546 window. It is not necessarily obeyed by all window managers.
547 Offsets, if present, are handled in ''X(1)'' style. A
548 negative x offset is measured from the right edge of the
549 screen to the right edge of the icon, and a negative y
550 offset is measured from the bottom edge of the screen to the
551 bottom edge of the icon.
552
553
554 __iconGeometry (__''class''
2 perry 555 __!IconGeometry)__
1 perry 556
557
558 Specifies the preferred size and position of the application
559 when iconified. It is not necessarily obeyed by all window
560 managers. Offsets, if present, are handled in the same
561 manner as in class Geometry.
562
563
564 __iconic (__''class'' __Iconic)__
565
566
567 This resource indicates that you would prefer that the
568 application's windows initially not be visible as if the
569 windows had be immediately iconified by you. Window managers
570 may choose not to honor the application's
571 request.
572
573
574 __matteColor (__''class''
2 perry 575 __!MatteColor)__
1 perry 576
577
578 Specify the color of windows. It is used for the backgrounds
579 of windows, menus, and notices. A 3D effect is achieved by
580 using highlight and shadow colors derived from this color.
581 Default value: #ddd.
582
583
584 __name (__''class'' __Name)__
585
586
587 This resource specifies the name under which resources for
588 the application should be found. This resource is useful in
589 shell aliases to distinguish between invocations of an
590 application, without resorting to creating links to alter
591 the executable file name. The default is the application
592 name.
593
594
595 __sharedMemory (__''class''
2 perry 596 __!SharedMemory)__
1 perry 597
598
599 This resource specifies whether animate should attempt use
2 perry 600 shared memory for pixmaps. !ImageMagick must be compiled with
1 perry 601 shared memory support, and the display must support the
602 MIT-SHM extension. Otherwise, this resource is ignored. The
603 default is True.
604
605
606 __text_font (__''class'' __textFont)__
607
608
609 Specifies the name of the preferred font to use in fixed
610 (typewriter style) formatted text. The default is 14 point
611 ''Courier''.
612
613
614 __title (__''class'' __Title)__
615
616
617 This resource specifies the title to be used for the Image
618 window. This information is sometimes used by a window
619 manager to provide some sort of header identifying the
620 window. The default is the image file name.
621 !!ENVIRONMENT
622
623
624 __DISPLAY__
625
626
627 To get the default host, display number, and
628 screen.
