A WideAreaNetwork is a Network that covers a geographically large area, usually larger than a just a city (Which would be a MAN or MetropolitanAreaNetwork), and larger than just a few buildings (A LAN, or LocalAreaNetwork?).

A network connecting different networks together isn't really a WideAreaNetwork, but an Internet, the largest of these is known as The Internet.
