Would it not make more sense to consider tasks instead of specific Windows applications? For example, my parents only ever used their copy of Microsoft Office to view Word documents they had been sent via e-mail. When they switched to Linux, they did not need clones of MicrosoftExcel, Word, !PowerPoint, and Access. All they needed was an application that allows them to view Word documents. See http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/09/1934259 for an example of a task-oriented table. -- MatthiasDallmeier

This comes back to matthias's point earlier that perhaps the question should be "how do you do this?" instead of "what is the same as this?" -- PerryLorier

When writing a large application VB has issues, even simple things like no inheritance make it nearly impossible to do anything of any size. I don't use the xmms load gui I admit. however it's interface looks the same as any other gnome app. I was thinking more about the scriptability of sawfish (binding keys to scripts etc) than the simple features like focus follows mouse. And, uh, are you going to finish your sentance? -- PerryLorier

-I run Win2K on Desktop, getting around to installing [GNU]/[Linux] again. The last Linux desktops I tried, just didn't 'feel' as nice/smooth as Win2K (I tried playing with mouse settings/etc, but no luck)... note this was circa Redhat 6.2, so things may (will?) have changed since then.

-E-mail: Netscape Communicator 4.7, runs nicely on my Celery 400, the odd bug (1/6-months), but I can work around it.
-The main thing is that 'it just works'...
-
-And *.Doc/*.Xls: StarOffice 5.2... a bit kludgy, and the 'do you want to save this document (that was already a *.xls document) message gets annoying.
-
-Web Surfing: IE 5.0 - It just works (falls over occasionally (1/-month) but is better than the last version of Phoenix I tried (kept on crashing); Same for Netscape Navigator 4.7...) --

-''You really should try more recent versions then. Linux on the desktop has come a LONG way since RH 6.2, and I've had no problems with recent MozillaFirebird (the new Phoenix) or Mozilla for ages. Openoffice.Org is also a lot better than StarOffice 5.2. If you want copy of RedHat 9 or Mandrake 9.1, ask on the list and come to the next LUG meeting (assuming you live in or near Hamilton, NZ). --DanielLawson''

%%%hmmm, i too would like to know how that one ended, or, if i'm missing the point, just what said missed point might be.
%%%about that table, when did Kwrite and Openoffice become GTK/GNOME apps? i would go ahead and edit, but i don't want to break that spectacular table.
