WebServices are the idea that not only humans want to surf the web, but programs want to be able to do so too. For instance, Amazon has a lot of information about books, and provides ways to sell you books. Someone else might want to display information about books on their website (perhaps listing all the books that certain people have written and provide you a mechanism to buy them). So Amazon have a SOAP interface to let you find information about books they sell.
