[Acronym] for __V__ery High Bit Rate __D__igital __S__ubscriber __L__ine VDSL extends the distance of Ethernet over existing telephone wires. With just one RJ-11 copper wire pair, you can easily connect two Ethernet networks up to 1.2 kilometers apart, with full duplex transfer rates of up to 17Mbps. And the telephone service can still be used when data is transferring over the same line VDSL is the best solution to quickly provide cost-effective, high speed network services to multi-unit buildings, such as residential (multi-dwelling units) and commercial (multi-tenant units) buildings, hotels and hospitals. By utilizing the existing telephony infrastructure, network installation is simple without the hassle of installing new wiring. With its 17Mbps throughput speed, Video on Demand, IP telephony and various broadband services can be easily delivered to users. ---- One of the newest xDSL schems is [VDSL]. As of this writing , many of the details of the signaling specification remain to be worked out. The objective is to provide a scheme similar to [ADSL] at a much higher data rate by sacrificing distance. The likely signaling technique is DMT/QAM. [VDSL] does not use echo cancellation but provides separate bands for different services, with the following tentative allocation: * POTS: 0 - 4 kHz * ISDN: 4 - 80 kHz * Upstream: 300 - 700 kHz * Downstream: >= 1MHz -- Taken from "Data and Computer Communications" - William Stalling - 6th Ed, ISBN:0130863882 See [DSL], [ADSL], [HDSL], [SDSL] ---- CategoryNetworking
