A multi-user operating system. Based on the earlier (1960's) operating system [Multics] ("MULTiplexed Information and Computing Service") which BellLabs felt was getting bloated, so they wrote their own system called Unix, which was "Multics without the balls" (or: "only one of whatever Multics was supposed to be a lot of"). See also: * [http://www.webopaedia.com/TERM/U/UNIX.html] * JargonFile:UNIX * JargonFile:Multics * WikiPedia:UNIX * WikiPedia:Multics UNIX is a registered trademark of AT and T (although this has been sold now?). This is why you might see some people refer to the free systems (such as [Linux], and the [*BSD]s) as "unix-like" or "u*nix". Unix (or unix-like :) operating systems: * [AIX] (by [IBM]) * [Darwin] (AppleCorporation) * Digital Unix ([DEC] acquired by Compaq) (became Tru64) * [FreeBSD] | [NetBSD] | [OpenBSD] * [HPUX] (HewlettPackard) * [Linux] * [SCO] * [SunOS] | [Solaris] (SunMicrosystems) * [Tru64] ([Compaq], which has merged with HewlettPackard) * [Ultrix] * [Xenix] (MicrosoftCorporation) (yes really) ---- Also see [ UNIX History | http://www.levenez.com/unix/ ], [POSIX] and WhyUnix.
