+A multi-user operating system. Based on the earlier (1960's) operating system [Multics] ("MULTiplexed Information and Computing Service") which BellLabs felt was getting bloated, so they wrote their own system called Unix, which was "Multics without the balls"

+UNIX is a registered trademark of AT and T (although this has been sold now?). This is why you might see some people refer to the free systems (such as [Linux], and the [*BSD]s) as "unix-like" or "u*nix"
