+A multi-user operating system. Based on the earlier (1960's) operating system
[Multics] ("MULTiplexed Information and Computing Service") which BellLabs felt was getting bloated, so they wrote their own system called Unix, which was "Multics without the balls"
.
-I am sure there
is a better definition somewhere out there, but
this will have to do for

+UNIX
is a registered trademark of AT and T (although
this has been sold
now?). This is why you might see some people refer to the free systems (such as [Linux], and the [*BSD]s) as "unix-like" or "u*nix"
.
