[Ubuntu | http://www.ubuntulinux.org/] is a DebianLinux-based LinuxDistribution. It is developed by [Canonical | http://www.canonical.com/], a company founded by South African philanthropist [Mark Shuttleworth | http://www.markshuttleworth.com/], who made a lot of money off [Thawte | http://www.thawte.com]. According to its site,

    “''Ubuntu'' is an African word, meaning ''Humanity To Others''. The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.”

One of Ubuntu's main strengths is bringing a nice up to date DesktopEnvironment ([GNOME] 2.8) to the architecture and package breadth of DebianLinux. Ubuntu is also committed to a 6 month release cycle, with 18 months of security and dataloss upgrades. While still a very young LinuxDistribution in the scheme of things it has a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see where it is in another 6 months time.
