An archive file created using tar(1), and usually compressed with gzip(1) or bzip2(1), which leads to the common extensions .tar.gz (or its contraction .tgz) and .tar.bz2. TarBalls are the choice means of distribution for software packages shipped as ready-to-compile source code (see InstallingSoftware).
