{Acronym] for TeleType.

Basically a device that looks like a typewriter, something that has a screen and some kind of keyboard. ssh(1) gives you a remote TTY. pty's are pseudo-TTY's and are used by the ssh(1) daemon, xterm(1), screen(1), etc; all programs that provide a 'virtual' TTY. :)
