Based in SiliconValley, Sun was formed by ex-Stanford students. Hence the name, __S__tanford __U__sers __N__etwork (I think). They are a unix vendor, selling their own hardware (eg [SPARC] Stations) and software (eg the [Solaris] OperatingSystem). They perhaps have the most to lose from the widespread adoption of linux on cheap [x86] hardware eating into their market.
