+SGI are well known for their really nifty machines with very pretty graphics (oh, and they look cool too)
. In the desktop environment, much
of this has eroded of late now that Intel machines have got stupidly advanced graphics cards.
-[SGI] have also donated
their file system (
[XFS])
to the OpenSource community and
have nice patches
for [Linux
] for this
. Hopefully they should be merged soon?
+However, for things like realtime HD video editing, there is nothing that can touch an SGI box. The I/O and scalability capabilities of the high end machines ([Origin|SGIOrigin], [Onyx|SGIOnyx]) are stupid. Think 1024-way [SSI] machines and enough I/O to backup 10TB/hour to tape.

[SGI] have ported
their [XFS] filesystem
to the Linux kernel. They
have also worked on the NUMA scalability work
for the 2.4 and 2.5 kernels on IA-64 in particular for their
[Altix|SGIAltix
] systems
