Founded in 1993 (read history), Red Hat are the company that took Linux from being a hobbyist tool to a trusted commercial operating system (the original RedHatLinux). However, instead of being nasty people, they've given back almost everything they've done to the community.

rpm(8) is the RPM Package Manager, but the first 'r' used to stand for Red Hat. A good source for up to date RPM files is FreshRpms (also has a howto on using apt(8) with RPM). http://rpmfind.net and http://rpmseek.com are also very useful resources.

They offer several certifications (RedHatCertifiedTechnician?, RedHatCertifiedEngineer, and RedHatCertifiedArchitect?) and lots and lots of corporate support.
