Acronym for Public Key Infrastructre.

The infrastruture required to verify that some user is who they say they are, either by PGP's WebOfTrust or perhaps a Certification Path.

There are many parts to the infrastruture:

  1. interoperability standards (X509, OpenPGP, LDAP, etc.) so that different products can work together
  2. software (KeyServers, TimeStampServers, RobotCA's, crypto-aware MailClients such as EnigMail and PINE etc.)
  3. actual content (the public keys and the web of signatures)
  4. social structure to support the software and content (key signing parties, etc.)
