NetBSD's goal in life is to be ported to your toaster, and everything else too. If you have some obscure hardware somewhere, NetBSD probably runs on it, or theres someone trying to port it to it. It's currently (20030922) ported to 53 different platforms with 17 different CPUs.

NetBSD was the first of The Three (modern) BSDs and developed from 386BSD 0.1 code, NetBSD 0.8 was released 19 Apr 1993. The other BSDs also owes their existance to 386BSD, FreeBSD directly as it also is forked from 386BSD 0.1 and OpenBSD due to the fact that it's a fork of NetBSD.
