MoDem or modem? is short for Modulator-demodulator, for the most part a Modem's role is to convert a digital signal, generally, from a computer to an analogue audio signal for transmission over phone line (the Mo bit), and to recieve and convert an incomming analogue signal, back to digital, for general consumption by the computer (the dem process).

anyone, what about CableModem?s? do they work in a similar way, or is the name inaccurate?
