Thanks for expressing interest in joining the WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup.

You don’t have to be a member, but it helps.

The WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup page gives an overview of the group and its aims, and explains how to join the WlugMailingList.

Membership allows you access to the WlugLibrary, gives you a shell account on the WlugServer, and contributes to the running costs of all sorts of things that the LUG offer. Also, you must be a member of WlugIncorporated to stand for executive committee positions and to vote at General Meetings.

Membership is currently set at $20 per year for an individual. Membership currently lasts from the time of payment until the next Annual General Meeting. Pro rata subscriptions are not offered. We don’t offer a family membership per se as meetings are free and everyone is encouraged to attend, but you are welcome to make a suggested donation of $35 per year for a family.

Recommended process

  1. Signing the form/Payment of membership fees

Please continue on into the secure site for details on how to get a membership form and return it, with payment, to us!

Be aware that if you pay online, we will not be able to get confirmation of your payment until the next monthly statement arrives from our bank.

  2. Creation of an account on the WLUG server

WLUG members are eligible for an Email account. Once your membership has been confirmed, an Email account (someone@wlug.org.nz) may be set up for you, with the username and password you specified.

If you asked for Shell access to the server on your membership form, you will have one created. (If there are any problems, someone will get in touch with you.) Currently, shell access is only provided via SSH – you will need to contact an administrator to get your PublicKey copied onto the machine. Read the SSHKeys for information on how to create keys and use SSH. See the WlugServer page for the AcceptableUsePolicy, and who to contact to copy keys over for you.

  3. Setup your account

Check that you can SSH to hoiho.wlug.org.nz. Make sure that the host key you see matches the server's key. See the WlugServer page for things that the server supports.

See WlugMailNotes for more information about using your mail account.
