This page is a list of things to remember when setting up a host.

Enable UTF8 locales

When prompted for locales, remember to generate UTF-8 varients as without these utf8 applications will fail to run. (See UnicodeNotes for more hints on how to do this.)

Make sure machines are behind a properly configured Firewall

If you are on a network, make sure your gateway is either behind a hardware FireWall device, or is acting as a firewall. If your machine is standalone and connects directly to the internet, make sure you configure a software firewall. See FirewallNotes.
