Comments, editing, welcome. This is pulled from a variety of sources and edited to fit, so it might not make sense. I would like to see this document in its final form ratified at the next meeting, so we can start collecting subscriptions and allowing accounts to be created. -- CraigBox
Use of the WLUG community server at hoiho.wlug.org.nz (hereby referred to as 'the WLUG Community Server' indicates acceptance of the following Acceptable Use Policy. Violation of any of these conditions will result in the immediate cancellation of the account(s).
The following activities are specifically disallowed:
Participation in any illegal activity including, but not limited to:
Distributing Illegal Material
No running background processes without permission, especially:
Attacks on other people including, but not limited to:
Other Misc "Rules":
Violation of these guidelines can result in your account being terminated, and possible expulsion from the UserGroup?.
The Waikato Linux Users Group Incorporated cannot be held responsible to the content of data passing through its community server. We recommend that critical or private data is not stored on the server. WLUG cannot be held responsible for any lost and/or corrupted data. Services are offered for "as is" for free. The WLUG committee reserve the right to stop offering them without prior notice.
This discussion related to the original first point. I have now updated it to clear up confusion. I see CraigBox has also added another point under Misc Rules that makes the original intention quite clear. Discussion below preserved for posterity.
(Does this mean that I can't use the WLUG Community Server if I go overseas? --MattBrown)
The implication in that clause is that you can't give access to this account to your mate from {Thai, Fin, Ice, Ire, Green, Po, Swazi, Switzer, Deutsch}-land. The only person who is allowed to access the account is you, and if you're here, and you log in from overseas, chances are it's not you. So in your case Matt you'd be fine.
(I assume we're worried about international bandwidth? Otherwise, if someone paid to be a member then they should be allowed to access the machine. --MatthiasDallmeier)
At this point I'd like to clarify a point here: you are not buying access to this machine, you are donating a subscription to the WLUG, and one of the benefits is limited access to this machine that can be removed at any time. We don't want people to sue if they're kicked off and say "But, but, I paid for access to that box.
No, the above was taken from other AUPs on other sites. I dont think Net4U's traffic model differentiates between national and international traffic. However, this issue is up to Net4U. Comments from Net4U? With respect to the actual point above, its probably best to remove the second part of that clause, its unneeded. --DanielLawson
I earlier added Shell access only, because once the wiki is there anyone reading without being a wlug member would be in breach of this policy (www access) -- KyleCarter
Why not replace/expand point 3 by just saying "no uploading of executables/src code/programs", except maybe for the explicit purpose of cgi scripts? Or is this box for more than www/ftp activities? (JohnMcPherson)
The box is for more activities than Web i feel. virtual hosts and webspace are easy to come by. And i am sure many users would find it easy to use it as a remote box for testing networking software they have written to connect to their own boxes etc. (KyleCarter)
