A first person shooter shows the game as if you were the character running around in it - ie you see your weapon and arms in front of you. (eg Quake, Doom etc)
Compare third-person (Tomb Raider, Max Payne) etc where you see the character from another observers' view, ie a camera above and behind the main character. FirstPersonShooters are usually the games of choice for gamers (CareAndFeedingOfYourGamer?, HowToLinuxGamersHOWTO?).
