mDNS and .local incompatibility

Symptoms

  • you cannot ping a local name, but you can look it up using host and ping its IP address

Hackish fix (SuSE 10.x)

  1. add the line "mdns off" to your /etc/host.conf file
  2. restart nscd (/etc/init.d/nscd restart)
