Acronym for Digital Equipment Corporation
They made VAX machines during the 1980's (and 70's maybe?) which were widely used - both WaikatoUniversity and CanterburyUniversity still have VAX mainframes in service. VAX's can run unix or Digital's Command Language (DCL).
Also made Alpha machines.
DEC were eventually bought out by Compaq.
