Overview

The Cisco soho aDSL routers are commonly refered to as the Cisco827 by the CiscoNuts?, but there is an expanding range of the 800 series aDSL routers. Because of the enhancements made to the Cisco 837, and that the price of the 837 is cheaper than the 827 (and 827H), Cisco will no longer produce the 827 (and 827H), however, they will continue to support them.

  • Cisco 827 (No longer available due to Cisco Releasing the Cisco 837)

    • 1x aDSL Port
    • 1x 10 Mbps Ethernet Port

  • Cisco 827H (No longer available due to Cisco Releasing the Cisco 837)

    • 1x aDSL Port
    • 4x 10 Mbps Ethernet Ports comprising of a 4 port hub (seen as 1 router interface (Interface Ethernet 0))

  • Cisco 827-4V

    • 1x aDSL Port
    • 1x 10 Mbps Ethernet Port
    • 4x FXS Analog voice ports so you can do VoIP and see if Telecom really garrantees their QoS.

  • Cisco 837

    • 1x aDSL Port
    • 4x 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Ports comprising of a 4 port switch (seen as 1 router interface (Interface !FastEthernet? 0))
    • Built in Hardware VPN and Encryption Module
    • IDS (Intrusion Detection System) feature set built in the IOS along with IP Firewall
    • More Flash, more RAM
    • Mmm, very nice :-)

  • Soho 97

    • Yes ! It's on the New Zealand Market at about two thirds of the price of an 837
    • Just a cut down edition of the 827H
    • Yes ! It runs IOS, it's not like the Cisco 700 ISDN Router
    • Software VPN and Encryption
    • Limited to 5 users Hey, with a server running Squid, what's the problem ? :-)
    • Does have IP Firewall

There is also the SOHO77 routers which aren't available in New Zealand that I know of.

Also in the same range of routers, are the broadband ethernet routers if you wish to have a wireless connection from Satlan, Net4U, or whoever. They are exactly the same except they have an ethernet port in place of the aDSL port along with the appropiate chip set and features

  • Cisco 806 ''(The 806 router has suffered the same fate as the 827 - it has been replaced by the 831)

    • Same as the 827H except for the aDSL port now becoming an ethernet port

  • Cisco 831

    • Same as the 837H except for the aDSL port now becoming an ethernet port
    • Got all those cool new features as the 837
    • Mmm, also very nice :-)

IOS Versions.

In New Zealand, all the Cisco 800 series broadband and aDSL routers comes with two IOS feature sets.

  • Comes standard with IP Firewall
  • Can be upgraded to IPSec (DES and 3DES)

GRE Tunneling

GRE Tunneling can be done using the standard shipped IOS, however, if you wish to encrypt the GRE tunnel, then you will need to upgrade the IOS to IPSec feature set to use the DES or 3DES encryption.

Features

As with all Cisco gear, you pay more than you would for something from DickSmith that is going to get you a connection to an aDSL network, but you get what you pay for.

Pricing

This year has been a very exciting year watching Cisco slash their prices. The prices have nearly halved since the 827s come out.
