A bulletin board (or BBS) was a piece of software that would run on someones modem-connected computer that you could dial up and connect to, participate in message discussions, download files, email other users, play online ("door") games, etc. These all predate the Internet by several years.

Lots of people involved with Linux (and the WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup) are old BBS people?

OliverJones (sysop of TheDigitalDream), PerryLorier, DanielLawson, JonPurvis, KyleCarter, MattCairns, CraigBox (sysop of Toontown), GreigMcGill (sysop of EchoesBbs), PaulMacDonald (Wellington scene), zcat(1), sysop of Cherrybomb (and later Cherrybomb Voicemail) are all BBS old timers, who else is?

See Hamilton BBS? Scene.
