The story of the legendary Amiga starts in 1982 when two former Atari emploees start the company Hi-Toro wich was renamed to Amiga to avoid confusing them to a Japaneese lawnmower manufacturer. "Amiga" means "Female friend" in Spanish.

After much trouble getting money for the project (including shady moves by Atari) Commendore finally came through and the subsidary Commodore-Amiga Ltd was created 1984 and only 11 months later the Amiga 1000 was released. But due to the high price (twice the Atari ST) it never took of. Not until 1987 when the Amiga 2000 and Amiga 500 was released the sales took of, even if the Amiga 500 was priceier than the Atari ST it was manys choice when moving from 8-bit computers to 16-bit. More and more games was made for the Amiga, takeing advantage of it's superior design compared to Atari ST.

After alot of successes as the Amiga 3000 and failures like the CDTV finally lead to 1994 when it all came to and end, the last nail in the coffin of 16-bit home computers.

The name Amiga has resurfaced several times and lived on thanks to it's dedicated fans. There has been many anouncement about Amiga-related products but wery few has become reality.
