[AVI] is an acronym for __A__udio __V__ideo __I__nterleaved. [AVI] is a media container FileFormat defined by MicrosoftCorporation. It is CoDec-independent. Since it relies on the audio track for timing, audio can only be encoded with [CBR], whereas video may be [VBR]. Some versions of file(1) can determine what CoDec~s are used in a particular [AVI] file. Compare [Ogg].
