AVI is an acronym for Audio Video Interleaved.
AVI is a media container FileFormat defined by MicrosoftCorporation. It is CoDec-independent. Since it relies on the audio track for timing, audio can only be encoded with CBR, whereas video may be VBR.
Some versions of file(1) can determine what CoDecs are used in a particular AVI file.
