Acronym for Advanced Encryption Standard

A relatively new encryption algorithm, which is taking over from DES as the standard encryption algorithm.

AES is a block cipher, designed by Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen, originally called Rijndael. A "Competition" was held to see what the successor to DES should be. Rijndael was one of the candidates and won. yay.
